A Christmas Carol - St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney

The Electric Canvas

theelectriccanvas.com.au

For the 2024 season of Christmas at the Cathedral, The Electric Canvas brought Charles Dickens’ beloved classic, A Christmas Carol, to life in a breathtaking son-et-lumière projection mapped onto the iconic façade of St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney.

This ambitious storytelling work required exceptional creative and technical collaboration. The Electric Canvas’ animation and design team reimagined the 1843 tale with rich, painterly visuals and carefully choreographed architectural projection, seamlessly blending tradition with innovation. Every element, from mood and characterisation to lighting and spatial rhythm, was calibrated to transform the cathedral into a theatrical canvas.

Animating the emotional arc of Ebenezer Scrooge, from miserly cynic to a man redeemed by compassion and generosity, the team crafted striking visual scenes for each spectral visitation: the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The narrative unfolded with clarity and heart, enhanced by a bespoke soundtrack and a single narrator whose voice embodied each character, adding warmth and dramatic texture to the experience.

This production demonstrates The Electric Canvas’ unmatched ability to honour storytelling while mastering the complexities of architectural transformation, marrying art, sound, and technology into a moving public celebration of hope, humanity, and the spirit of Christmas.
