King Dingo - VIVID Sydney

The Electric Canvas

theelectriccanvas.com.au

For Vivid Sydney 2025, The Electric Canvas collaborated with acclaimed Western Arrernte artist, Vincent Namatjira, to transform the façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia into a bold, high-energy projection: King Dingo. This ambitious work brings Namatjira’s signature wit and visual language into a large-scale, animated form, creating a rock’n’roll experience that merges painting, sound, and light.

Drawing on Namatjira’s celebrated King Dingo series, The Electric Canvas worked closely with the artist to translate his subversive portraits into a dynamic projection, mapped precisely to the MCA’s architecture. The work is accompanied by an original score composed by Namatjira and Indulkana-based guitarist Jeremy Whiskey, further enriching the multi-sensory impact of the piece.

At the heart of King Dingo is the figure of the dingo; portrayed in royal regalia or historic costume, serving as both a personal and cultural totem. A symbol of Indigenous strength and sovereignty, the dingo becomes a vehicle through which Namatjira reimagines Australian leadership and power structures. His paintings often portray historical and contemporary figures of authority, challenging inherited narratives of empire, colonialism, and influence.

In keeping with Vivid Sydney’s 2025 theme, Dream, the projection brings forward a vision of acknowledgment, resilience and pride. Rather than romanticising a pre-colonial past, Namatjira’s imagery embraces the complexity of shared histories, weaving together memory, humour and critique, to provoke reflection and conversation.

Through our collaboration, The Electric Canvas brings this vision to life on a grand scale. Our projection amplifies the narrative force of Namatjira’s work, allowing audiences to engage with it in a vivid, immersive format that reshapes the public’s relationship to art, architecture and cultural memory.
