100 Flowers Falling by Lindy Lee for Enlighten Festival
The Electric Canvas
Commissioned by the National Gallery of Australia and Events ACT, Lindy Lee: 100 Flowers Falling was created by The Electric Canvas for the Enlighten Festival 2025. A creative collaboration between Lindy Lee and The Electric Canvas, the work was projected onto the façade of the National Gallery of Australia.
Over many months, The Electric Canvas team worked closely with Lindy Lee to refine the concept and develop a visual language that remains true to the aesthetic she has cultivated through decades of practice. The result is a powerful interpretation of an ancient kōan; a Zen Buddhist teaching presented as an open question, story, or statement, designed to guide meditation on the paradoxes of existence.
100 Flowers Falling brings to life the kōan of The True Ch’ien, a story about remaining true to oneself in the face of a profound dilemma. It follows a young woman caught between her love for her husband and her duty to her family. Through this narrative, audiences are invited to reflect on the significance of choice in shaping our lives. The projection features cosmic imagery, vibrant colour, and ancient Chinese symbolism, unfolding across the dynamic planes of the National Gallery’s façade. It is accompanied by an original score by acclaimed Australian composer Lawrence English.
"In any choice we make in life we leave something of ourselves behind and something else steps forward. Some dilemmas are painful and some are not so painful. The response to this story is one about wholeness – and it has to come from your heart. It’s about you being able to embrace the ten thousand things inside of you." - LINDY LEE
