Rodeo FX had the privilege of contributing to Masters of the Air, an epic World War II drama produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. The 9-part miniseries is a continuation of the acclaimed Band of Brothers and The Pacific, but with a particular focus on the experience of US Air Force pilots in Europe.
Set against the backdrop of World War II, ‘Masters of the Air’ demanded a level of attention to detail that went beyond traditional storytelling.
On the ground, the Rodeo FX team recreated three different prisoner of war camps throughout the war and populated them with thousands of digital soldiers. Additional environments included a destroyed Nuremberg, Nazi flak guns firing in Holland, Ramitelli air base environment extensions and a military outpost on the outskirts of Rome.
In the skies, the team also created a fully computer generated sequence sending ‘Red Tails’ P40 warhawks on a bombing mission. B17 bombers, with mission-accurate nose art design and serial numbers, were animated to taxi down the runway of Thorpe Abbotts airbase in England for several sequences where our pilots prepare to fly out on their next dangerous mission.
Each frame became deeply rooted in research and extensive reference - the VFX process becoming a careful blend of history, technology, storytelling and artistic vision.
