Vivid Sydney 2024 - Customs House 'Gumscape with Road and Creatures'
Spinifex Group Sydney
At the centre of Vivid Sydney 2024, Customs House becomes a canvas for the whimsical and captivating world of renowned Australian artist Reg Mombassa. Known for his quirky and character-filled artworks, Mombassa's signature style embraces the cheekiness of Australian culture and shines a unique perspective on the world around him.
The Spinifex team selected from decades of Mombassa's archives before embarking on a journey to transform them into a 3D mapped animation via a select team of designers, 2D and 3D artists. This marked the first time Mombassa's artwork has been featured at Vivid Sydney and brought to life on such a grand scale, entertaining audiences with its truly unique style.
The animation is driven by a carefully curated soundtrack, featuring the songs by Monbassa’s band Dog Trumpet which are interwoven with quirky hand crafted sound design. This serves as the perfect accompaniment to the narrative thread centering around a lovable protagonist: the charming robot and his dog friend who need to navigate their way from the factory line in search of greater things.
This fusion of Mombassa's unique artistic vision and Spinifex’s animation and technical expertise emerges as a stand out for audiences young and old as we embrace Reg’s unique take on Australian culture and creativity.
