Badu Gili: Story Keepers
VANDAL
vandal.au/portfolio/badu-gili-story-keepers
Badu Gili: Story Keepers was commissioned by the Sydney Opera House to transform the Eastern Bennelong sails into a luminous dialogue of First Nations storytelling. Created in collaboration with the Biennale of Sydney and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, the projection brought together the works of Gooniyandi Elder Mervyn Street and Inuk artist Ningiukulu Teevee. VANDAL shaped and animated a six-minute projection journeying from the ochre heat of the Kimberley to the glacial stillness of the Arctic. Working closely with the artists, the team translated their static artworks into a cohesive, site-responsive animation that honoured culture, Country and narrative integrity. Through light, motion and careful creative collaboration, Badu Gili: Story Keepers positioned the Opera House sails as a living canvas for stories of kinship, resilience and cultural continuity, reinforcing one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks as a global platform for contemporary Indigenous voices.
