Shane Black’s action-packed thriller ‘Play Dirty’, which was mainly shot in Sydney, follows professional thief Parker and his crew as they attempt to pull off the biggest heist of their lives and find themselves accidentally pitted against the New York mob.

DNEG was proud to deliver close to 450 shots as the main VFX partner for the movie, with work across the film’s most ambitious and technically complex sequences led by DNEG’s Sydney studio. A key technical achievement for the team was a full-CG subway train and expansive New York City environment, featuring detailed set extensions, elevated tracks and snow-covered city blocks built digitally from a partial practical set. The dramatic train crash sequences showcase multiple complex FX simulations as the train tears through the streets, interacting with vehicles, debris and snow with explosive collisions. The DNEG team also created a fully CG ocean environment with a sunken Spanish galleon shipwreck and the Lady of Arintero statue, enhanced by intricate particulate and silt simulations. Across the movie, DNEG delivered key environment extensions and hero assets integrated with detailed FX, animation and compositing to support the film’s grounded yet explosive action.
