John Wick: Chapter 4
Rodeo FX
"Choreographing an action sequence can be challenging, especially when multiple characters are involved in a fight scene and various camera angles are required. However, when tasked with creating a car chase scene set in an empty German airport runway that would later become Place de L’Étoile in Paris, one of the busiest locations on the planet, the undertaking became even more complex. The team had to meticulously recreate every detail of the Parisian roundabout, including cobblestone roads and the intricate car choreography surrounding the Arc de Triomphe. Before comping the different elements from the German plate, intricate lighting work was necessary to capture the City of Light's signature look, including reflections on the cars and spillover from spotlights illuminating the monument at the center. To complete the project, the team had to work with various stunt doubles and cars, including Keanu Reeves' signature Barracuda, ensuring that each element was ready for comping.
But the project did not stop there. As any John Wick fan knows, no movie would be complete without an intense, perfectly timed gunfight. This time, John was found in a Parisian apartment fighting waves of attackers, as the camera traveled in one uninterrupted shot through walls and ceilings. This 2.5-minute sequence was the result of hundreds of hours of work and the stitching of several different shots filmed from various angles. The team had to perfectly match each of Reeves' movements to create the illusion of an endless fight in a completely recreated CG environment, from the fire of Wick's new weapon, the Dragon's breath, to the reflection of the enemies as they stepped into puddles of water and broken mirrors."
