MATILDAS: RECODED' is a data-generative art project that transformed real-time data feeds from Australia's matches in the FIFA Women’s World Cup into a series of immersive, digital, motion artworks.

Each artwork was generated using multiple data feeds that was captured live in the stadium at every game. The data feeds included pinpoint accurate positional coordinates of every match, even right down to every touch of the ball, possession, threat and opposition pressure values. It further included AI-powered, split-second predictions on passing and goal shooting decisions.

'MATILDAS: RECODED' transformed raw and complex data into immersive motion artworks, capturing the shifting dynamics of every match as it unfolded in real time.

Conceived and brought to life by VANDAL, the projects was exhibited on large-scale LED screens in and around Lendlease properties throughout the duration of the competition, and later exhibited at the prestigious SXSW 2023.

VANDAL Creative Director, Chris Scott said: "Sports teams have long been using data to gain a competitive edge, but when you turn that data into generative art, it unlocks a whole new way of experiencing the game. It gives an amazing visual insight into the big forces at play: momentum, pressure, flow, connectivity and strategy - all these things are the difference between winning and losing at the highest level".
