Questacon - Curiosity Mosaic

Eye Candy

eye-candy.au

Originally developed in collaboration with The Brickman, Eye Candy’s mosaic-building platform transforms collaborative LEGO® experiences into streamlined, digitally managed events. Visitors use iPads to replicate 6x6 tile designs with real LEGO bricks, contributing to large-scale mosaics built piece by piece. Having supported hundreds of thousands of tiles across global exhibitions, the system continues to evolve.

In 2024, Questacon commissioned an ambitious new adaptation of this platform for Canberra’s Enlighten festival. Reimagined as a large-scale digital projection, the experience allowed visitors to complete virtual tiles through a physics-based iPad interface, with each tile mapped to a section of a building’s façade. To maintain momentum, visitor-built tiles were blended with procedurally generated ones—ensuring a new mosaic appeared every 40 minutes across ten unique designs.

Each mosaic culminated in a spectacular finale, as the finished image burst into motion—bricks cascading from the wall in a dramatic digital waterfall. The result was a visually striking, crowd-driven experience that brought together science, creativity, and public participation in true Questacon style.
