‘Mikey 17’ is the movie adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7 and stars Robert Pattison as Mickey, an ‘expendable’ on a space mission to colonize a new ice planet. With every exploratory mission, Mickey’s body dies and he is re-printed. But one regeneration goes wrong, and things take a very dangerous turn. As a main VFX partner for ‘Mickey 17’, DNEG worked closely with Director Bong Joon Ho and his team to take multiple key sequences from concept design and storyboards, through previs, to animation and final shot. DNEG was responsible for tackling all of the sequences set on the ice planet of Niflheim. The team rendered the vast ice field environment entirely in CG, with interactive snow and blizzard FX, and populated it with hordes of alien creatures known as Creepers which were meticulously developed through an extensive pre-production and animation process. The DNEG team delivered large-scale complex crowd sequences for the Creepers, as well as key performance animation for ‘Mama Creeper’ and the more prominent ‘Junior Creepers’.
