Feature Film Sequence
Alien: Romulus - Xenomorphs
On Alien: Romulus, the visual effects for the Xenomorphs were crafted to honor the original films, complementing practical effects with computer-generated creatures that were firmly grounded in reality.
The CG Xenomorphs were meticulously matched to the practical puppets used on set. A key objective was to seamlessly intercut between these CG and puppet versions, effectively blurring the distinction between digital and physical creations. This integration allowed for a consistent and believable creature presence throughout the film.
Action sequences involving the Xenomorphs—particularly those depicting zero-gravity movement, wall crawling, and other dynamic actions—often necessitated CG to achieve a range of motion beyond the capabilities of practical puppetry. However, these digital performances were not fabricated from scratch. Observed practical motions from the on-set puppets informed the animation, ensuring movements were tailored to specific shot requirements.
Crucially, the Xenomorphs were treated with the same care and attention as live actors on set. This approach extended to the digital realm, where even minor imperfections and spontaneous details that naturally arise during principal photography were deliberately replicated in the CG. This meticulous attention to nuance played a key role in amplifying the creatures’ realism and their chilling presence on screen.
