Christmas at the Cathedral 2022 - St Mary's Cathedral Sydney
The Electric Canvas
The Electric Canvas was commissioned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney to design and deliver a projection son et lumière for their annual "Christmas at the Cathedral" event. The event is for everyone, regardless of faith or cultural background, and aims to spread the Christmas message of peace and hope throughout the community. In addition to the projections, local entertainers and community choirs perform, and market stalls provide food and gift offerings.
The main projection onto the Cathedral's façade featured a narrative animated show, based on the Catholic Church's message of Christmas, with an overarching theme centred on hope and peace. The building’s intricate stained glass windows and the Crypt floor’s magnificent terrazzo mosaic gave inspiration to our creative team when designing the content. Bookending the traditional Christmas story, the show opened with the themes of the creation and concluded with an image of Adoration of the King (© The National Gallery London).
In between renditions, a festive holding state kept the Cathedral façade illuminated, whilst an ultra-high definition projection featuring imagery inspired by the main show was displayed on the ground of the forecourt for young and old alike to play amongst and interact with.
