Adelaide Christmas Cracker Trail

Monkeystack produced the largest public AR activation that South Australia had ever seen for the City of Adelaide, developing a mobile app for a gamified AR experience that visitors to the city could easily download to their smartphones and go on an engaging, fun and festive AR journey following a trail of 14 City of Adelaide Christmas Festival locations.Adelaide Christmas Cracker Trail pillars were installed at each of the 14 locations, complete with QR codes to download the app to iOS and Android devices, unique in-app scannable codes, and ground detection and decal alignment technology to take the user through an augmented reality experience based upon each locations festive event. We produced interactive animations throughout each step of the app that users (big or small) could play with. Each pillar was activated by scanning the unique number via their camera within the app, producing an AR cracker for the user to ‘pull’. Each of the 14 crackers contained up to five unique ‘baubles’ to pop and reveal bespoke AR driven interactive games, facts and jokes relevant to the location. We utilised face-tracking technology to create fun, bespoke selfies to save and share in locations with high footfall, encouraging the audience to interact further with their surroundings via the phone screen. The animated AR interactions at each pillar were designed to incorporate Adelaide’s history and landmarks, tying in with the City of Adelaide’s Christmas Festival events and instalments. These unique interactive AR builds encouraged the user to decorate Adelaide’s Giant Christmas Tree, post a Christmas letter at the Town Hall, see Santa back on Grote St, or take part in a rubber duck race that appears in the Rymill Park pond.
