Badu Gili 3 - Wonder Women Projection on the Bennelong Sails of the Sydney Opera House

Badu Badu Gili: Wonder Women is a 6-minute light projection on the Bennelong Sails of the Sydney Opera House. The light projection animates the work of artists from across Australia: Wadawurrung elder Marlene Gilson; Yankunytjatjara woman Kaylene Whiskey; Luritja woman Sally Mulda; and Western Arrarnta women Judith Inkamala and Marlene Rubuntja and the late Kamilaroi woman Elaine Russell.

Yakkazoo was invited by the Sydney Opera House to bring Badu Gili to life in 2018 curated by the Opera House’s former Head of First Nations Programming, Rhoda Roberts AO and again in 2021. A point of difference for us in 2021 was the new collaboration with the AGNSW and curator Coby Edgar and her team and part of their 150th Anniversary celebrations. After a consultation process with the artists, we started storyboarding and began to experiment with different styles. Marlene Rubuntja’s doll was brought to life through a process of Photogram and motion-capture and 3D animation. The remainder of the project was done through a combination of 2D and 3D animation.
