DANNY ROSE STUDIO

Immersive art experience by DANNY ROSE STUDIO, presented at Atelier des Lumières in Paris and Carrières de Lumières in Les Baux de Provence ( South France)

An immersive experience into the Japan of the collective imagination and the art of Japanese print masters that began to circulate in Europe in the second half of the 19th century.
This revelation of Japanese art would vastly influence Western art, Impressionist painting and the avant-garde artists, as well as decorative art, music and dance…
Dreamed Japan is a contemplative and dreamlike stroll through the backdrop of a Japan that may no longer exist but that never ceases to be a source of fascination: the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms gives way to a magical and mysterious forest inhabited by the “yokai,” the Spirits of Japanese folklore and then to the sea, Hokusai’s iconic great wave submerges the Atelier des Lumières, accompanied by the music of Claude Debussy.
Charming geishas, dressed in their elegant and colourful printed kimonos, appear behind rice paper screens, and, as in nature where everything is a question of contrasts a fierce war dance of Samurais replaces all this sweetness captivating visitors who are eventually brought back down and carried away by the wind, among the lanterns floating in the night sky.
Danny Rose Studio has made a judicious selection that provides a small glimpse of the great diversity, richness, and modernity of these works (the Japanese artistic movement known as Ukiyo-e), and their creators some very well known by the general public, like Hokusai and Kuniyoshi.
The Danny Rose Studio also carried out a striking piece of staging to sketch the Dreamed Japan that these works bring to mind.
Particular attention was paid to the choice of music, from Ryuichi Sakamoto to Claude Debussy’s La Mer (‘The sea’), inspired by Hokusai’s Great Wave, and the unbridled rhythms of Japanese drumming, also realising a 24 audio channels spatial soundtrack that creates engaging sound trajectories in space for a total sensorial experience of visitors.
Dreamed Japan is simultaneously at Atelier des Lumières in Paris and at Carrières de Lumières in Les Baux de Provence (France). The Danny Rose Studio has conceived a made-to-measure version for each space, which together use more than 250 video projectors to immerse audience into the experience
